Full-size headphones

Headphones by definition do not put pressure on the ears, so they are considered the most comfortable among all types. The size of the headphones does not limit designers in using large high ‒ quality emitters, so the vast majority of the most perfect-sounding headphones are full-size.

Over-ear headphones

Due to the lower weight, many music lovers choose them to listen to music on the road, but this type of headphones slightly presses the ears, causing some inconvenience. But, unlike full-size models, overhead headphones do not interfere with wearing glasses and large earrings.

Description of headphones

The types of headphones answer the question of how they are held on the head and sit on the ears. Full-size headphones are equipped with a headband with large cups and ear pads that completely cover the ears. Headphones by definition do not put pressure on the ears, so they are considered the most comfortable among all types. The size of the headphones does not limit designers in using large high ‒ quality emitters, so the vast majority of the most perfect-sounding headphones are full-size. But large sizes can sometimes be a disadvantage, for example, outside the home and office, most music lovers prefer more compact models.

Those who want to get the miniaturization of headphones, but also excellent noise insulation, coupled with high playback quality, should pay attention to the intra-channel models ("plugs") that are inserted directly into the auditory canal. However, for the best playback quality and comfortable use, in-ear headphones should be as close as possible to the diameter and shape of the ear canal, so users often have to select ear pads, purchasing, for example, additional foam rubber nozzles. The most expensive models of in-channel headphones offer the option of individual manufacturing for the ears of the future owner. If the in-ear headphones do not fit perfectly in the ears, they will also sound, especially in the bass area, causing unpleasant sensations during long listening sessions.

The acoustic design of the headphones is connected with the design of the cups: open type ‒ the air from the back of the emitter freely leaves the headphones through the cup, usually made in the form of a metal or plastic lattice. Closed type-the rear cup of the speaker is sealed, creating an acoustic chamber in which the emitter operates. There is also a third type-semi-open, where the radiator chamber is not completely closed, leaving a passage for air. Open headphones – lightweight, comfortable, having a neutral and airy nature of playback ‒ in the absence of a rear camera, there is no place for the body resonances that color the sound to manifest. On the other hand, it is more difficult to get the deepest bass from open-type headphones, since manufacturers have to deal with a natural drop in sensitivity of -6 dB/octave. In addition, open headphones almost do not cut off external sounds, are less protected from moisture and dust, therefore they are poorly adapted for use in noisy places and outdoors.

Closed headphones provide increased sound insulation, cutting off external noise and preventing sound leaks outside. The closed camera allows you to adjust the playback without any problems, even for increased bass output, even for a uniform playback balance. No wonder most monitor headphones for professionals have a closed design. On the other hand, in some closed models, you can still notice a light body color or a weak echo from a sealed chamber. If you listen for a long time with closed headphones, your ears may overheat (sweat). Semi-open headphones are an intermediate design, in terms of sound insulation and the nature of playback, they take more from the open or closed type, depending on the degree of sound permeability of the cups.
